  My hometown lies at the foot of a small hill. A small river passes by it. There was a chemical factory to the south of my hometown two years ago. It sent out a great deal of waste gas into the air and poured lots of waste water into the river. The terrible pollution was harmful to us as well as to the environment.

  Nowadays, the government has done something to protect the environment and prevent it from being polluted. Now, my hometown is becoming more and more beautiful.

  Many countries will experience aging populations in the next century because of declining birth and mortality rates. China will soon join their ranks. According to statistics, the aging of China's population will approach its peak by the middle of the next century,with the percentage of the people aged beyond 60 making up 27.4 percent of the total. That means one out of every four people will be elderly.

  As for the issue of aging, its situation has been growing increasingly severe in spite of the fact most people are still ignorant of the problems it brings about. Firstly, with families becoming smaller and living , it is even graver for families to care for aged members adequately. Secondly, aging causes a relative decline in working force in that fewer people have to support the increasing aged people. Consequently, the productivity of the whole society is affected to some extent. Thirdly and most importantly,the aging of population in China resulted from the successful implementation of family planning has not been synchronized with national economic progress.

  The rapidity of the population's aging has made it more urgent for the adoption of countermeasures. No doubt they key is to build a solid economic foundation. Meanwhile, importance shall be attached to overall changing the backward situation in social security,welfare and service.

  What's more, family care and community services shall also be encouraged.

The shape of a moon cake is round as it symbolizes a big moon.   In Guanghua Temple in central Beijing, more than 20 workers and volunteer citizens started cooking Laba porridge in twelve huge pots on Monday night, which they expect to hand out to several thousands of temple-goers on Tuesday.

  Residents in a Hangzhou community cook and eat Laba porridge together. Laba Festival, the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, falls on January 15 this year.

  Fang Hui Chun Tang, an old, well-reputed pharmacy in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou, also has the tradition of serving free porridge on Laba. Nutritious Chinese herbs are mixed into their dish, and a xylitol-based recipe is prepared for people with diabetes. The pharmacy expects to receive some 12,000 visitors on the special day.

  Neighborhoods in Chinese cities join up to cook and eat Laba porridge. Qi Guifeng, 75, is an organizer of one such public meal in Hangzhou. She called in several senior citizens in her community to buy the materials and serve the porridge in the community's public yard.

  "We get together to do a good thing and have fun. We are glad our neighbors can have a bowl of hot porridge," Zhang Meiqin, one of Qi's neighbors, said.

  Dragon Boat race Traditions At the center of this festival are the dragon boat races. Competing teams drive their colorful dragon boats forward to the rhythm of beating drums. Many Chinese consider this time of year an especially dangerous time when extra efforts must be made to protect their family from illness. Families will hang various herbs, called Ay Tsao, on their door for protection. The drinking of realgar wine is thought to remove poisons from the body. Hsiang Bao are also worn. These sachets contain various fragrant medicinal herbs thought to protect the wearer from illness.
